Maritime client (ABS) asked us to productize our data factory services into a self-serve platform. I owned the product from conception to launch—scoping requirements across 9 stakeholder groups, managing a global cross-functional team, and shipping 50+ features in 5 months. The platform was later acquired.

The Challenge

  • True 0→1: company had never productized this service before
  • Limited customer access for discovery (new revenue line with few existing users)
  • Had to align engineering, ops, QA, and leadership on requirements

What I Did

  • Used internal ops team as proxy users when direct customer access was limited
  • Created prioritization survey to quantify must-haves vs wants across stakeholders
  • Defined 3 core features: Hierarchy Builder, OEM Library Matching, Export

Early-stage startup struggling to find product-market fit with 18% retention. I ran user research on 41 super-users (31-76 active days), built data-backed personas, then translated those insights into targeting parameters that transformed paid acquisition efficiency.

The Challenge

  • Low retention (18%) despite high download volume
  • Discovered many "active users" were children spamming, not real creators
  • No clear understanding of who actually retained and why

What I Did

  • Manually analyzed 41 super-users: reviewed profiles, content, linked socials
  • Built data-backed persona: Juice Wrld-type trap artists (24% of super-users)
  • Key insight: "super users need listeners"—they create but lack audience
  • Translated personas into targeting parameters, A/B tested messaging by segment

F500 Sign-ups

World's first B2B chemical marketplace ("Amazon for chemicals"). Owned activation experiments—ran Statsig-driven A/B tests on paywall placement and sequence, designed discovery features, and represented product at Paris and NYC tradeshows.

Features Shipped

  • Compatible Products—helps buyers find complementary chemicals
  • Regional Availability Filters—critical for B2B where shipping costs matter
  • Homepage redesign + banner ad placement optimization

Key Learnings

  • B2B buyers need to see value before committing—paywall sequencing matters
  • Domain-specific features (regional filters) outperformed generic discovery
  • Field exposure at tradeshows gave direct insight that informed feature design

Founder had a prototype and ambiguous goals. I helped consolidate business vision, conducted user interviews with PTs/trainers/physicians, ran competitive analysis (DorsaVi, HingeHealth, Nextiles, etc.), and built a Q2 marketing plan with segment testing framework.

Key Insight

  • "Targeting consumers can drive demand for B2B decision-makers"—from physician interview
  • Personal trainers and athletes more likely early adopters than clinicians
  • Case studies recommended by interviewees for social proof

Deliverables

  • Competitive & industry analysis (SWOT for 6 competitors)
  • User interview synthesis with actionable insights
  • Segment testing plan: Athletes, Personal Trainers, Physical Therapists
  • A/B test framework for messaging validation

User Interviews

Pre-launch neurotech startup developing brain entrainment wearables. Built end-to-end research flow connecting biosignals (HRV/EEG) with user-reported outcomes. Designed data capture system with privacy-first architecture for alpha testing.

The Challenge

  • No research infrastructure existed—needed to validate device from scratch
  • Had to balance clinician workflow requirements with consumer UX
  • Sensitive health data required privacy-first approach

What I Did

  • Conducted 10+ user interviews, translated insights into UX wireframes
  • Partnered with engineering, clinicians, and exec team on requirements
  • Built scalable testing protocol that can expand from alpha to beta
  • Delivered MVP research flow in first 10 days

The Full Story

Joyce Chan is a product builder focused on turning complex problems into practical, human-centered technology.

Her work spans early-stage startups to enterprise research, with a consistent thread: leading products from zero-to-one and partnering across disciplines to ship meaningful, real-world outcomes.

Originally trained in marketing, Joyce developed a deep respect for understanding how people actually behave, not just what they say. Today, that foundation shapes how she builds: combining user research, data, and strong execution instincts to move products forward quickly and thoughtfully. That curiosity about human behavior and systems led her to pursue graduate research as a Schwarzman Scholar at Tsinghua University, where she completed a Master’s in Global Affairs and explored how large language models can support mental health screening while addressing bias and ethical concerns.

She is building Smart Attorney, an AI-powered platform that helps immigration lawyers automate extreme hardship waiver affidavits, a process that can take weeks and cost families tens of thousands of dollars. The project reflects her long-term interest in using technology to improve access to critical systems, influenced by her early volunteer work supporting immigrant communities in New York.

Born and raised in New York City, Joyce speaks Cantonese, Taishanese, Mandarin, and Japanese, and is most energized by building products that combine technical rigor with real human impact.
